Sam, the Last of the Gunsmoke Gang

Sam, a black dog, smiling up at the camera with her tongue out

By Mallory Brown

Y’all remember our Gunsmoke Litter?! Well, the rest of the gang has ridden off into the sunset, and somehow we’ve still got one little cowgirl sitting in the Blakely Animal Shelter waiting on her turn.

Meet Samantha, better known as Sam, the last remaining member of the Gunsmoke gang.

Sam has been with us SINCE APRIL. Yes, APRIL. At this point, she’s practically got seniority, should be earning PTO, and probably knows more about shelter operations than I do.

And the wildest part?

THIS DOG IS PRACTICALLY PERFECT.

I’m talking so well-behaved that I’m starting to wonder if she’s secretly an undercover investigator sent to make the rest of these kennel hooligans look bad.

Let’s review her criminal record

Age: 1 year old, young enough to enjoy life, old enough to know better!

Weight: 48 pounds, the perfect size for a couch companion and unpaid personal assistant.

Dog friendly: Absolutely! No beef with the neighborhood canines.

Kid friendly: Loves the little humans!

Cat friendly: Even the cats have given her their approval, and we ALL know how hard that committee is to impress.

Farm animal friendly: Chickens, goats, livestock… Sam isn’t interested in starting a barnyard feud. She’s a lover, not a cattle rustler!

Housetrained: YES! She understands that the bathroom is OUTSIDE. Somebody alert the other inmates.

Kennel trained: YES! No dramatic hostage negotiations required.

Quiet and laid-back: Unlike some of our residents who believe every falling leaf requires a full-blown Amber Alert, Sam minds her business.

Professional shadow: This girl will follow you EVERYWHERE.

Going to the kitchen? Sam’s coming.

Going to the laundry room? Sam’s coming.

Walking to the mailbox? Sam’s coming.

Going to the bathroom? Congratulations, you’ve hired a 48-pound security guard who doesn’t believe in privacy.

If you have ever wanted your very own Secret Service agent with four legs, Sam is accepting applications.

And now for the really big news

AND NOW FOR THE REALLY BIG NEWS…

SAM HAS JUST COMPLETED HER FAST-KILL HEARTWORM TREATMENT!

This sweet girl has endured the injections, the medications, and the difficult treatment process. She’s been such a good girl through it all.

She’s done her time. She’s fought her battle. And now she deserves to finally have a life outside of a kennel.

She’ll still need to follow her veterinarian’s post-treatment activity restrictions, but her heartworm treatment injections are FINISHED!

Here’s where we need help

Sam has watched every single one of her Gunsmoke siblings leave the shelter.

One by one, they got their chance.

And somehow, the quietest, sweetest, most easygoing little cowgirl of the bunch is still waiting.

SINCE APRIL.

She doesn’t bark for attention. She doesn’t put on a circus performance when someone walks by. She just quietly waits, hoping maybe this time somebody is coming for her.

And that absolutely breaks my heart.

She’s already housetrained, kennel trained, incredibly social, and has completed her heartworm treatment. We’ve done everything we can to get her ready for the next chapter.

Now we need a rescue willing to write it.
